Abstract

This work aimed to investigate the main technical characteristics of plasters used in historical houses in the city of Pelotas, treat, therefore, mortars lime base - also known as stucco - applied between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The study focuses on the base layer of a masonry coating, called scariola, a kind of polished stucco. The main characteristics observed were the number of applied layers, the proportion of mortar and aggregate granulometry used. The results were compared with the classical techniques of masonry coatings (stucco) described in the treaty of Vitruvius and research work in this area. The results show that the technique employed in Pelotas is more simple with a smaller number of layers and not reducing the particle size of the aggregate used in the mortar over the layers overlap.
