The process of patrimonialization of the Solar Lopo Gonçalves: the manor that became museum

Abstract

This study analyses the narratives in favor of preserving the historical heritage of the city of Porto Alegre in the local press, in the 1970s. It examines how experts assigned new values, meanings and uses to the Solar Lopo Gonçalves Bastos in their struggle for its preservation and its recognition as a cultural heritage of the city. The article investigates, particularly, the narratives of the journalist Alberto André and of the historian Sérgio da Costa Franco and their multiple representations of memory, heritage and museum in the defense of preserving the Solar in that historical context.
