Cultural Patrimony: between resource and alternative values
Abstract
The concept of patrimony is strongly tied to ideas of property and resource, which are essentially economic notions. This is a long time association, of gradual construction of the concept. However, under the economic scope of modern living, excessively economic criteria commend patrimony’s use value over its symbolic or esthetic values, even in a society which discusses memory and human or social rights, which are alternative forms of conceiving the cultural dimensions. The main consequence of a capitalized conception of cultural patrimony is the vulnerability of its own existence. In this sense, we risk condoning the ideas that: patrimony sustainability needs profitability, the value of the patrimony is economically measurable, and, mainly, that patrimony, in order to have its place insured in society, it has to be profitable and self-sufficient.Downloads
