Abstract

This article investigates the press coverage of Porto Alegre (RS) about the opening of Iberê Camargo Museum, which occurred in 2008. It aims at understanding, through the study of the texts of four major journals in the city about the fact, how local journalism portrayed the genesis of a referencial institution of contemporary art, by identifying key formats and thematic coverage. It was found that, mainly through notes, the press characterized the museum as an exhibition and memory space, also giving special attention to the architecture. The distinction conferred by the institution to the personalities got evident by the recurrence of the subject in the social columns, while the impacts of the new museum for the city appeared punctually.
