THE PALEONTOLOGY HOW TO STIMULATE MUSEOLOGICAL VISITATION: AN EXPERIENCE IN PAMPA GAÚCHO

Abstract

Paleontology is a field of science that fascinates people of different ages. However, it is not usually sufficiently disclosed by academic centers from Brazil, which are responsible for research in this field. The region of São Gabriel possess a rich paleontological patrimony, but most population is unaware of its existence and importance. In order to reduce this gap between science and society, it was organized (through a partnership between the Universidade Federal do Pampa (Unipampa) and Instituto Cultura Harmonia de São Gabriel), a temporary exhibition called “1a Mostra Paleontológica de São Gabriel”. This was displayed in a space at the Museum of Nossa Senhora do Rosário do Bom Fim, and presented fossils from São Gabriel, other parts of Rio Grande do Sul, other states, and also from other countries. Explanatory posters and monitoring by trained undergraduate students from the Unipampa to guide visitors through the exhibit. It was initially planned to last a month, but, by public request, it was extended to two months. It received two thousand, five hundred and seventy -four visitors. Because of this opportunity, many citizens who did not yet had any contact with this science at all could learn paleontology basics and closely observe the fossils of their.. Therefore, this exhibit resulted in benefits for the community and also to local science itself, as the community became aware of the importance of their fossil patrimony.
