The fetish of interactivity in museum's devices: efficacy or frustration in the diffusion of scientific knowledge
Abstract
Interactivity has been considered as one of the promising features of contemporary museums, and its different facets in museal spaces have been intensively debated. In this paper we discuss the overvaluation of interactive gadgets in science museums. Our argument is that the recurrent and thoughtless use of new technologies in the exhibition rooms has led to a mistaken sacralization of digital devices, assigning to them most of the pleasure and mental interactivity in museological experience. Here we present some thoughts on this field, that have been elaborated from analysis of our current work at the museum Espaço do Conhecimento UFMG. From the rescue of some meanings and difficulties in the use of interactive technology we seek here to contribute to the debate on the challenges of contemporary expography.
