An Evaluation Model of Social Networks in Museums. Case Study: Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona

Abstract

The presented study aimed to investigate how social networks were used by the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) to communicate with their online communities. It was intended to: (a) establish the contexts and purposes of the construction of the space “Comunidades”, designed during the renovation of the MACBA website in 2012, where the museum concentrated all their social media profiles; (b) know the strategy designed by this institution to approach their communities and encourage their active participation. The contents of six social media profiles were quantified and the Department of the Web and Digital Publications of the MACBA was interview, in order to understand whether these new resources of communication and information were being used as spaces for conversation and sharing of contents and experiences. The results of quantitative and qualitative methods allowed us to understand the contexts and purposes of the construction of space “Comunidades” were related to the desire and the need of MACBA to promote and spread his contemporary collection, exhibitions, activities and events that unfolded, in the most distinguished supporters, and not exactly with an intention to encourage public participation and the exchange of narratives and meanings with their online communities.
