Project “Promotion of Brazilian Scientific and Technological Heritage”: results in Pernambuco

Abstract

This paper presents the parcial results of the Project “Promotion of the Brazilian Scientific and Technological Heritage” at Pernambuco state, between 2011 and 2014. The quantitative results of the project were detailed, and compared to national data; subsequently a preliminary analysis of the trajectory of S&T heritage in Pernambuco was carried out. In order to do that, a history of the creation of collections and disposal of S & T objects in the researched institutions has to be made, establishing four major chronological clippings to understand both the history of these collections' formation, such as their disposal. As a conclusion, the paper states that a few S&T collections have survived the abundant discharges made during the twentieth century, and that such situation is strongly related to the lack of perception of this type of collection as cultural heritage. In this context, the collections identified by the project until this moment, are even more relevant to the valuation of S&T heritage in Pernambuco.
