Heritage and Memoir: the Pateo do Collegio as a witness to the urbanization of São Paulo city

Abstract

The city of São Paulo has developed from the Pateo do Collegio, with the occupation of the Jesuits and the building of their college, founded in 1554. In this paper, we look for elements to embed the Pateo do Collegio in the intense transformation of São Paulo a city in which major changes in the landscape between the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century made it three different cities in a hundred years. The main purpose of this article is to present Pateo do Collegio as a heritage that witness, guards and represent these three cities.
