Cultural landscapes and the lived heritage: a glimpse of decolonization for a conscious musealization

This paper is a result from the exercise of questioning the application of the “cultural landscape” concept to contemporary social contexts, proposed by the International Council of Museums – ICOM and the Siena Charter, written in 2015, by the national committee of ICOM in Italy. Interrogating the notion of “landscape” as a universal concept possible to be applied to non-European contexts, we propose a reflection on the museum role and the very notion of musealization under the perspective of decolonization. Defending the decolonization of musealization and landscape as a reflexive exercise necessary to museology in the present, the paper unveil some of the main challenges for museums and their agents. Furthermore, the argued notion of “cultural landscape” is imbedded in the anthropological discussion on the concept of culture, which leads to its apprehension in the cultural heritage discourse in disconnection with the more complex character in its contemporary uses. The lived dimension of transmitted heritage as image or landscape, explored in the colonial process and consumed today in the “turismification” of places is, then, ignored.Downloads
