Abstract

This paper evaluates and discusses the participation of the province of Bahia and the events organized between 1866 and 1888 to collect products for the national exhibits in Rio de Janeiro and, later, to represent the state in Universal Expos abroad. Considered unique opportunities to present Brazil as a modern, progressive nation during the period known as the Second Reign, under the personal supervision of Dom Pedro II, this process demanded a great deal of effort from provincial authorities as it was necessary to play down regional contradictions.
