KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION SYSTEMS AND THE THESAURUS OF SCIENTIFIC ASSETS IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE

Abstract

This work deals with the historical evolution and approaches of typification, functions and dimensions of knowledge organization systems (SOCs). It discusses the contemporary debate on the thesaurus as a valid instrument in the modern information retrieval. It comments on the Thesaurus of Scientific Collections in Portuguese Language (Brazil and Portugal ) as an example of application in collections of museums and institutions of science. It highlights the importance of research on SOCs by the academic community and information professionals.
