Evolution of the Theory of Museology in Spain

This article is intended as a brief analysis of the course taken by Spanish museology in recent decades. While Spain was not initially a leading pioneer of museological research, the renovatory airs of the new museology gradually found their way among museologists and scholars concerned with museums. As a result, there began to be an interest in museum pedagogy and museological didactics in an attempt to dynamise the exhibitions programmed in museums and bring their content closer to the public. This triggered an awareness of the importance of regarding the museum as a space of communication and dialogue whose existing reality can be questioned, leading to the adoption of the hermeneutic and epistemological concepts furnished by critical museology. While indebted to the Francophone and Anglo-Saxon museological traditions, Spanish museology has sought its own path, and is attempting to confront the challenges presented by the 21st century with creativity and imagination, striving to open new spaces for reflection, dialogue and permeability to the demands of the postmodern museum.Downloads
